“I’m complex and multifaceted.” –Paula Lalala
Art is a holistic pursuit including objects, images, and experiences. The primary purpose of art is to communicate, yet art functions in many roles: financial instrument, social signifier, spiritual vehicle, educational or instructional device, political or propagandistic tool, and more.
The context in which you encounter a work of art and the form in which the art is manifest dictate your experience of and relationship to the artwork.
“Think of my art work as an ontology*.” — Paula Lalala
“My art work is a search for meaning.” –Paula Lalala
*Ontology – philosophical study of the nature of being, becoming, existence, or reality; set of concepts or categories in a subject area or domain that shows their properties and the relationships between them.
In computer science and information science, an ontology is a formal naming and definition of the types, properties, and interrelationships of entities for a particular domain of discourse.
Domain of discourse, or universe of discourse, is defined as the set of entities over which certain variables of interests in some formal treatment may range, or the complete range of objects, events, attributes, relations, ideas, etc. that are expressed, assumed, or implied in a discussion.
